Stalking in the 1st degree is classified as a Class C Felony in Alabama, which is significant as it reflects the severity of the offense. This categorization typically indicates that the behavior involved poses a serious threat to the victim’s safety, leading to more stringent legal consequences than lesser offenses. The classification as a felony means that upon conviction, an individual could face substantial prison time, fines, and a permanent mark on their criminal record, which can have long-lasting implications for employment and personal freedoms.

In Alabama, the law defines stalking in the 1st degree as engaging in a course of conduct that harasses, intimidates, or otherwise causes a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of others. This reinforces the notion that the offense is taken seriously and is treated as a significant criminal act, thus justifying its classification as a Class C Felony.
